X Pro1 af assist focussing light

I've been 'experimenting' with flash on my recently acquired X Pro 1. The wall lights in our sitting room are of only moderate brightness, but are, seemingly, sufficient to prevent the af focussing light from operating. The result is delayed/poor focussing. The only control seems to be on/off.

In the dark, the light works fine.

Any comments/advice, please?
